to recovery is just beginning. officials say the election should not be affected by sandy, but there are signs that may no longer be true and news just in a new timeline of the events in libya and what it says about the amin station's response. let's go "outfront." good evening. tonight, the wreckage. millions growing more desperate as they struggle to cope with the loss of homes, power and family in the wake of hurricane sandy. the u.s. death toll has risen to 88. 44 in new york state alone and the number continues to grow as many people are still missing. i spent the day on staten island where more have died in new york than anywhere else. some of the worst devastation is here and people told us they're not getting enough help as we visited some of the hardest hit areas with congressman michael brim, searchers discovered the body of two young boys. ages 2 and 4 in the marsh. they were swept from their mother's arms in the most violent moments of the storms. some were hoping for a miracle. there was no one today. >> we've confirmed four bodies. the two children they were looking for, they fou

're following this hour, slow pace of storm recovery efforts in the northeast. 12 days after sandy, some residents saying they are not receiving any help from fema or even the red cross. with such widespread devastation residents are dealing without basic services. that before the storm they took for granted. >> no water. no heat. no lights, garbage not being picked up. garbage, halfway. garbage thrown everywhere. smell. the environment out here is terrible as far as smelling. odor is horrendous. it's depressing. >> gregg: anna is covering this live at staten island. >> we are 300 yards from the water at one of six dumping stations around staten island. we have been watching this debris pile up for two weeks in the nor'easter that hit last week. it did slow the crews. it's quite an active scene behind me today. a sign of progress being made. that is good sign. also hundreds of volunteers piled into buses at city hall this morning with their own tools and shovels helping out super storm sandy victims. volunteers sorting goods going house to house and cleaning up parks. groups are leaving

for first time unemployment claims. labor department warns the figures were distorted by superstorm sandy. applications declining in one state because the unemployment office lost power during the storm. sandy pushing up applications in other states because those temporarily out of work sought benefits. martha: you may see some people getting jobs as rebuilding begins on the northeast. here is little perspective on the number since december 2007. here is the chart we look at. weekly jobless claims stayed above 300,000. they spiked back in 2009. we're a long way from that number. economists say weekly claims must consistently fall below 375,000. that is shown by yellow line. we've been bumping along it for a long time. to indicate the job market is truly strong enough to move the economy in the right direction to change the overall unemployment number. lately weekly jobless claims have dipped below the line, averaging 372,000 a week this year. this is the fourth time the claims have been under 360 in the past 4 1/2 years. overall, 5 million americans are collected unemployment benefits. th

will start to give states like ohio coverage. now to the aftermath of the superstorm sandy. and the newly canceled new york city marathon. dozens of generators, warm blankets, and food were reportedly left sitting there in central park, helping no one. this is happening when storm victims were reportedly freezing and going hungry. trace gallagher has an update. reporter: part of bloomberg's reason to go through with the new york city marathon, people complained that it would divert resources from those who desperately need them. when the race was canceled, the supplies -- they just sat there. they are still sitting there. not just the badly needed generators, but tens of thousands of mylar space wickens, jackets, bottled water that is desperately needed in a lot of areas. security crew say the reason the supplies cannot be moved is because there was an impromptu race that they could not push the runners out of the way there. the race organizers have not officially said why the supplies have not moved. we e-mail the mayor's office and no response on that. but the city did say that some of

the next 30 minutes, where he will tour the damage done by superstorm sandy. he will be greeted by andrew cuomo and governor bloomberg. and there are two closed door meetings on the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. one is taking place with the house intelligence committee and the the other with the house foreign affairs committee. there are new developments on the david petraeus front. testimony from members of congress will be happening. the general is set to brief the house intelligence committee tomorrow and likely the senate intelligence committee as well. now the defense secretary leon panetta came out ordering an investigation of legal and ethical issues among military leaders. the president giving his first remarks yesterday on the scandal that prompted the president to resign. >> we're safer because of the work that dpaifd petraeus has done, and my main hope right now is that he and his family are able to move on. and that this ends up being a single side note on what has otherwise been an extraordinary career. >> the president also took leading republicans to task

for a rescheduled event that he had to cancel tuesday to deal with hurricane sandy. then he is off to nevada, colorado and ohio. yesterday, obama toured the aftermath of hurricane sandy in new jersey along with governor chris christie who had nothing but kind words for the president. >> has worked incredibly closely with me. i cannot thank the president enough for his personal concern and compassion for our state and for the people of our state. >> the governor has said he has no intention of bringing romney to new jersey to survey the storm's damage. christie aides are denying any sort of rift with the romney campaign saying it is just about dealing with the storm and not about presidential politics. but one of the main political speculations here is that christie thinks romney has no chance of winning and he is setting himself up for a run in 2016. >>> romney has a good cause to be worried if the polls have anything to say about it. president obama is ahead six points in iowa. that's coming from the nbc news "wall street jo
